Businessman Fabricio Correa said since no one else has stepped up to run against Ecuadoran President Rafael Correa, he will take on his brother, if the leader seeks reelection in 2013.
Fabricio Correa founded an opposition party in 2010 amid a scandal, and a big row with the president, over contracts his business had with the state.

Relations between Ecuador and Azerbaijan:

Azerbaijani Prime Minister Artur Rasizade has met the Ecuadorian minister of foreign affairs, trade and integration, Ricardo Armando Patino Aroca.

Ricardo Patino minister told Artur Rasizade that the purpose of his visit was to discuss the prospects for the development of cooperation between the two countries. He said that Ecuador was interested in the development of relations with Azerbaijan in all spheres.

Soon after a judge suspended Emilio Palacio’s three-year prison sentence and multimillion-dollar fine for committing libel against Ecuadoran President Rafael Correa, another judge announced he would hear a new case against the embattled journalist, this time for slander, reported AFP.

One year after the alleged attempted coup d’etat that shook Ecuador on Sept. 30, 2010 (known as 30S), Fundamedios published a report about attacks against the media and freedom of expression in the country. The report studies attacks before and after 30S, and shows a significant increase in the number of aggressions against journalists in the last year.

Fundamedios reports 211 attacks against journalists in the year since 30S, which account for “52 percent of all attacks against freedom of the press in Ecuador during the last four years.”

New law in Ecuador that stems from an initiative passed in the country earlier this year:

Leftist President Rafael Correa enacted a new antitrust law Tuesday specifying that Ecuador’s news media owners and bankers cannot hold significant financial stakes in other industries.

The measure also bars any company from gaining a monopoly in an industry.

Ecuador’s business community criticized the law, saying it further empowered Correa by making his government the arbiter of what is considered monopolistic behavior.

Correa is already at war with much of the news media over his use of a criminal libel law against the opposition newspaper El Universo.
